International Women’s Day originated at an international congress in 1910 in Copenhagen, Denmark. This congress was attended by women from 17 different countries. At that congress, a woman from Germany named Clara Zetkin suggested setting a special date to celebrate each year as an international women’s day. That day women would have an opportunity to hold special events and demonstrations in order to attract public’s attention to their problems.

It was proposed to set the date on the 8th of March because it was an anniversary of the famous protest of textile and garment workers in 1857 in New York City.
